Blogging for Business Hands On Workshop - MIRC

Blogging is simple. Blogging is inexpensive. Participants will learn the
basics of good blogging, the tools available to make and update a blog, and

Own a Horse for a Day
What does it take to own a horse? Experience horse ownership by participating in general chores and care; grooming, feeding, tacking, attention and love. Horses and instruction provided by
the Northwoods Saddle Club. This is an outdoor learning activity. Lunch will be served. All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Book Camp
Create a "One World, Many Stories" Travel Journal at this summer's one day book camp.
Artists of the Creativity Tank will guide participants in creating the book form of a travel journal.

Family Art Walk
Children and their families will learn to create environmental art using only the materials and elements found while walking in nature. Artist Marie Schrobilgen will assist MacRostie Art Center Staff to introduce the styles and processes used while creating art with nature. YMCA Community Family Picnic
It's the perfect time of year to get outside, do something active with your family and enjoy a
picnic. Wear comfortable clothes (don't forget a swim suit) and plan on getting active with
your children. There will be games, water play, flag football, and races going on throughout
the evening. It's a great way to get up, get out and get moving with your family. This event is
free and open to the community (suggested donation - bring a dessert to share). The Itasca
County Family YMCA is hosting the Family Fun Picnic on Monday, August 8, from 5:00-7:00pm
on the YMCA grounds.

Next Great Decisions Discussion Group is May 18th from Community Education

Great Decisions Discussion Group will be meeting next on Wednesday, May 18^th Noon-1:30 pm at the Blandin Foundation.  The topic they will be discussing is "Responding to the Financial Crisis"

As an immediate response to the financial crisis of 2007–08, governments around the world stepped in to bail out troubled private banks deemed "too big to fail," underscoring the interdependence between private and public finances. With the recent eurozone crisis, what have we learned so far and is it possible to ensure that future crises will not occur?

Think Spring!

Saturday April 30^th 1 pm  Spring Gardening Program: Flowering bulbs

William Dougherty will talk about flowering bulbs and their life cycle, use and culture.  He will also provide an overview of different types of spring and summer blooming bulbs. Dougherty is a professional landscape designer and garden writer and past President of the Iris Society of Minnesota.

May 5, 7 pm Ann Markusen, Professor of Economics at the Humphrey Institute,

            Why is the Economy Floundering & What Can We Do About it?

Professor Markusen will explain sources of current economic woes: twenty years of flawed trade policy, financial deregulation, and erosion of the tax base. Consider the consequences: ever-widening income gaps between the rich and the rest of us, lower-wage jobs, and an inadequate social safety net. She will also outline national, state, and local policies that can reverse current stagnation.

May 7,  9:00-1:00 Medieval Madness:

The Society for Creative Anachronism invades the Library with displays, demonstrations, crafts and games for all.  Costumed members of the local Shire Vilku Urvas will offer colorful portrayals of life in the middle ages.  Demos and displays will include cord weaving, embroidery, illumination and sewing, rapier and heavy wiapons combat, chainmail making and more.

Join KAXE's phenologist, John Latimer, for a hike along the Mississippi River. Learn about the riparian ecosystem, look at newly emerging plants, and watch returning birds.  Meet in the library's community room, and after a short hike, return to the library to continue conversation about Phenology and signs of spring in northern Minnesota.

A hands-on intergenerational event

Wendy Grethren will lead participants in learning how to play the dulcimer. No musical experience is needed. Children age 10 and above and adults are encouraged to attend together. Ten dulcimers will be provided. You can learn to play or just watch and listen

Join us for a fun afternoon of drumming! First we will make our own percussion instruments. Next, Mr. Michael Thursby and a group of percussionists from Grand Rapids Senior High will share with us some percussion rhythms from Africa. Finally, the High Schoolers will teach us a few rhythms using our new instruments! Whether you like music from around the world, drumming, crafts, or just hitting things, this is the day for you!

Empty Bowls Project Events Begin Monday May 2nd

Greetings!   Join us for lunch and help us feed a bunch!  The 2011 Empty Bowls Project festivities begin Monday, May 2nd  with the Celebrity Bowls Reception at the MacRostie Art Center from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Then join us for the Empty Bowls main event where you can enjoy the bread and soup on Thursday, May 5th at the Sawmill Inn from 11:00am - 2:00pm and 4:00pm - 6:30pm. The cost is $5.00 for soup only and $15.00 for soup and a handmade bowl. Takeout will be available. This year we have added the option of delivery to any area location with 10 or more orders. 4,700 miles around Alaska & Yukon!! An evening with Andrew Skurka-National Geographic Adventurer of the Year

The Alaska-Yukon Expedition was Andrew Skurka\'s most recent, and audacious, adventure yet. For 6 straight months Skurka skied, trekked, and packrafted 4,700 miles in a giant loop around Alaska and Canada\'s Yukon. His route passed just beneath Mt. McKinley, descended famed rivers like the Copper and Yukon, and traversed the Brooks Range. During the most remote stretch across the Yukon Arctic and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (A...NWR), he went 650 miles without crossing a road and 24 days without seeing another human. In this presentation Skurka shares this journey\'s most important and powerful stories, supplemented with stunning photos and entertaining video. He also reflects on the broader significance of this experience and of his other adventures (which cumulatively measure 30,000+ miles), with particular attention to setting goals, seizing opportunities, stepping outside comfort zones, and finding humility and happiness in life.
