Great Decisions Discussion Group - State of the Oceans

Great Decisions Discussion Group 2012
Great Decisions Discussion Group is reconvening for 2012 to explore and discuss topics of the most thought-provoking foreign policy challenges facing Americans today. Great Decisions provides background information, current data and policy options for each issue and serves as the focal text for discussion groups. After a short presentation, attendees participate in a lively discussion about the topic of the day.

Our first topic for discussion is State of the Oceans.
The world's oceans are essential to life on earth, and are tremendously sensitive to global climate change. What are the consequences of climate change on oceanic factors like biodiversity, sea levels and extreme weather systems? How can the U.S. and its international partners address the emerging challenges to this shared resource?

Join us at Grand Rapids Area Library (note the change in location due to Bixby's closing) on Wednesday, March 7th, 11:30 am -1:30 for our first topic, State of the Oceans. Zany Fimo Puppets

Tuesday Nov. 15 at 3:30

Let's check out author Carlo Collodi who wrote Pinocchio! With Creativity Tank artists, you'll learn the features of the face as we sculpt our own puppets with fimo clay and create zany people or animal puppet faces. While the clay is hardening, you can create a story line for your zany character! Open to all ages. Children 0-6 must be accompanied by adult. This is a FREE Children First! Event. Contribute on Give to the Max Day

The third annual 'Give to the Max Day' is Wednesday, November 16.  This on-line event is a statewide GiveMN.org day-long opportunity. This year the on-line donations received for the Grand Rapids Area Library Foundation on 'Give to the Max Day' will be dedicated to the Riverfront Energy Center 'Dashboard'. On November 16, simply go to www.GiveMN.org  and enter Grand Rapids Area Library Foundation in the “search for a cause”  box - or click on “donate” and then enter Grand Rapids Area Library in the box that pops up.

The Lowdown on Eating Disorders from the Trenches 

Thursday, Nov 17  7 pm

Becky Henry, award winning author of Just Tell Her to Stop: Family Stories of Eating Disorders, is a nationally recognized expert on eating disorders.
What once was thought to be a problem for teen and college-aged girls now also affects middle schoolers-senior adults and males. Through Hope Network, an organization Henry founded, families become better educated about eating disorders, stop feeling alone and/or blamed and learn strategies for living with an eating disorder.
Hope Network also helps health care providers understand the basics of eating disorders, red flags to watch for, and how to cut through shame and secrecy to make needed diagnoses and referrals

 

Holiday Hours

The Library will be closing early on Wednesday November 23, and closed all day on Thanksgiving day, November 24.  We will be open regular hours on Friday (9-5) and Saturday (10-2).

Goldie’s Bucket List (Mary Shideler shares stories and photographs)

Tuesday, November 29  7 pm

Goldie, at eighty-nine years plus has not let a broken hip stop her from trying new and interesting adventures. From riding elephants and camels to skydiving or cruising town in a banana car at last June's Blues Fest, Goldie and her daughter, Mary Shideler, have seen and experienced over 70% of the wishes on the bucket list Goldie started at age 80.
Mary shares stories and pictures highlighting their escapades and inviting audiences to adopt her mother's mantra, "Life is for living!"Maybe their stories will inspire your bucket list!

 

Family Movie Night   Thursday, December 1, 6:00 pm 

This month we will present "Cars 2" on the big screen in the community room! Bring dinner or a snack and join us!

 

Story times!  Bring the little ones for a fun morning with stories, songs, rhymes, a snack and craft.

Saturdays at 10:30  and Mondays 9:30 and 10:30. 

 

Great things in the Friends of the Library Book Store

The Friends of the Library Book Store now has a foreign language section, a home-school section, and many children’s books.  Books are constantly being added, so stop in regularly to see what’s new! 

There will be a holiday sale set up in the meeting room on Wednesday, December 7 with many holiday books and many books suitable for gift giving (including books to give yourself!)

What’s Happening at the Grand Rapids Area Library

What do you want to see at the Library?

The Arrowhead Library System has received a grant from the Minnesota Legacy Amendment Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. This grant will be used to provide art, arts education and arts access, and preserve Minnesota's history and cultural heritage for your region this fall, winter and spring.

Last year this grant funded the museum and event passes, photography and art workshops, authors, musicians, poets and other performers at libraries around the region, including many programs here in Grand Rapids.

 

Genealogy Workshop Handouts available

If you missed the Genealogy workshops last week, the handouts are posted on the Library’s web site on the “Reading Lists” page: http://www.grandrapids.lib.mn.us/reading.htm

The presentation was full of very useful information and the participants raved about it!  Thanks to the Itasca Genealogy Society and the Itasca Historical Society for providing lots of information, and snacks!

The Schoolmarm as Feminist: How Schoolteachers Helped Women win the Vote and Other Rights   Thursday, November 3,   7 pm

Teresa Alto, instructor at Itasca Community College, explores the undersung role of schoolteachers in women's history in the U.S.
While most of us have a stereotype of early women teachers as sour disciplinarians and dour, retiring figures, in reality schoolteachers can be credited with opening up the professional world and higher education to women. They were pioneers who fought relentlessly for women's right to have a voice as citizens and as workers.
Using a distant relative as a focal point, Alto shows the central role of schoolteachers in winning women's rights.

 

Paula Poundstone, coming to the Reif on November 5, is a national spokesperson for the Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Foundations and Friends.  See the ALA web site below for more details, and a short PSA.

We have nearly 2000 ebooks available for download to a variety of e-readers and devices, which now includes Kindles.  Go to http://arrowhead.lib.overdrive.com Click on the Kindle announcement on the left side to retrieve all Kindle-compatible ebooks, or browse by different catagories of fiction or non-fiction for ebooks.

 

October Programs

How 2 B Books    Tuesday, October 4, 3:30-4:45 pm

Do you know "How 2"? How do you eat spaghetti Put bait on your hook? Fly to the moon? With Creativity Tank artists, we'll look to classic children's author Munro Leaf, and his illustrations for inspiration. You will create a pullout pocket book to draw and write your own "How To" instructions for any number of fun and fantastical things we know how to do!

Open to all ages. Children 0-6 must be accompanied by adult.

This is a FREE Children First! Event.

Film: “Cancer Cell Research: the Way of all Flesh” Tuesday, October10, 7 pm.

We are collaborating with ICC for  their fall symposium based on the book ”The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack”  There are several activities taking place on campus on Monday, October 10.  Check the ICC web site for details. http://www.itascacc.edu/   We will be hosting a film “Cancer Cell Research: the Way of all flesh” and discussion with ICC faculty on Tuesday evening

 

Orchestra visits Wednesday and Thursday October 12 and 13

Members of the MN Orchestra will be visiting the Library twice this week.  On Wednesday afternoon from 5:00-5:45 they will be playing in the Library, and the Friends of the Library will be serving apple cider.  Stop by to listen for a few minutes while you browse for materials or hang out and read , or settle in for the entire session! On Thursday afternoon at 2:00, Orchestra members will be providing a concert for kids. “Max found two sticks” is an introduction to musical instruments suitable for young audiences.  Bring the entire family! Genealogy workshops October 15

Saturday, October 15 is a great day for learning about starting or continuing a family history.  Lois Abromitis Mackin, chair of the Education Committee for the Minnesota Genealogical Society, will lead two workshops: “Beginning your Family History” from 9 am –noon, and “Taking Your Genealogy Further” from 1-3:30 pm.  Refreshments will be provided by the Itasca county genealogy society and the Itasca County Historical Society. Class Size is limited and pre-registration is required.  Stop at the library or call 326-7640 to register for one or both workshops. 

 

Teen Read Week October 16-22

Thursday Oct 20, 1-2 pm  Picture it! 

Just for teens! Join Maggie Desmond-O'brien as she leads you through a session on digital photo editing, Flickr, and other cool things about online photos.

October 16-22^nd is National Friends of the Library Week.

Please stop by the library to learn more about the Friends' activities and to find out how to become a member of the Friends. Or browse the used book store and make a contribution, and purchase a book bag to take your books home in! The Friends also maintain Bright Red Book Shelves at two locations for Project Read.  If you have gently used books for toddlers or preschoolers, drop them off at the Library for placement on the bookshelves

Go Fish!
We have fishing rods for loan thanks to the local DNR Fisheries Division, local merchants and the Grand Rapids Evening Rotary Club.  Fishing rods and PFDs for children and adults can be   used on the fishing pier or along the river or borrowed for guests if you don’t have enough!

Essentia Health Itasca Hospice Team is seeking volunteers. You can be a part of the team that supports patients and their families as they LIVE out this last part of their journey.
