Children First! FREE Events for children and their families for the summer.

We have lots of fun FREE things to do this summer in the Itasca County area. Check out the list below of events, classes and programs in our area for children, youth, teens and their families.  You can also see them online and register for them at www.getlearning.org. Lots of exciting things to do and explore!

JUNE EVENTS

Celebrate Trees - Arbor Day at Forest History Center 2011
Maximize your knowledge of TREES. Explore our special stations in the forest-For the Love of Leaves, Dr. Forest, Adding it Up, Death in the Forest, This My Tree, and Monsters in the Forest.
Take home your own special tree to plant.

Petting Zoo
Pet animals like a Potbellied Pig, the Lionhead Rabbit, chickens and even a llama and peacocks .
Pony Rides will be available and treats will be served.

Art of Storytelling
Hang-out at the campfire and listen to local author, Frank Anselmo, read from his first book in the "Ghost Lake Chronicles". follow along to the adventures of Arnold and Scooter as they plan a camping trip to investigate the legend of Ghost Lake! Enjoy hot dogs and marshmallows around the campfire.  Please bring your own lawn chair or blanket. For all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Frank Anselmo with have his books available to purchase.

Own a Horse for a Day
What does it take to own a horse? Experience horse ownership by participating in general chores and care; grooming, feeding, tacking, attention and love. Horses and instruction provided by
the Northwoods Saddle Club. This is an outdoor learning activity. Lunch will be served. All children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Please make sure you are on time for this special event! Registrations required and register early to secure your spot. You must sign and submit a liability waiver for all participants prior to the event. The liability waiver is available at Bigfork school

Book Camp
Create a "One World, Many Stories" Travel Journal at this summer's one day book camp.
Artists of the Creativity Tank will guide participants in creating the book form of a travel journal.
Explore your creativity through folding, binding, collage, and marbling. Meet in the community
room of the Grand Rapids Area Library. For kids ages 7-12. Limited space available please register with Library 218-327-8823 or online at www.getlearning.org .

Weather Wise
Do you wonder where thunder gets its sound?  Are you curious where lightening comes from?  Want to learn about tornadoes or snow? Join us for a program with WDIO Chief meteorologist, Justin Liles, as he explores answers to these questions and more! This program is geared toward children PreK-Middle School and their families.

Family Art Walk
Children and their families will learn to create environmental art using only the materials and elements found while walking in nature. Artist Marie Schrobilgen will assist MacRostie Art Center Staff to introduce the styles and processes used while creating art with nature. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera to record their finished artwork. The art walk site will be the Forest History Center Hiking Trails.

YMCA Community Family Picnic
It's the perfect time of year to get outside, do something active with your family and enjoy a
picnic. Wear comfortable clothes (don't forget a swim suit) and plan on getting active with
your children. There will be games, water play, flag football, and races going on throughout
the evening. It's a great way to get up, get out and get moving with your family. This event is
free and open to the community (suggested donation - bring a dessert to share). The Itasca
County Family YMCA is hosting the Family Fun Picnic on Monday, August 8, from 5:00-7:00pm
on the YMCA grounds.

AUGUST EVENTS
Family Fun Day:Watercolor Painting
MacRostie Art Center staff & volunteers will work with children and their families to create art using watercolor paint. The project will beginwith a warm up exercise, and  then participants will be able to create still lifes, landscapes, and abstract works.
