Your opinion on the Minnesota State Budget is requested November 29

With funding from the Bush Foundation, the Citizens League is launching a series of 25 statewide community workshops, giving Minnesotans an opportunity to weigh in on the troublesome state budget crisis. According to the Citizen's League, "the workshops are informative, fast-paced and interactive -- illuminating the current reality of the state budget, examining future trends, and asking participants to identify values and priorities they think should help frame state budget decisions for the coming decade and beyond. Findings will be presented to our newly elected governor and Legislature in January 2011."

The Love Knot- Grand Rapids September 10th

The Love Knot is a comedy about love and marriage, age and image, growing up and settling down.  It tells the story of newlyweds Hope (Mary Fox) and Allen (Dan Hopman). He is almost 50 and Hope is his second wife.  She\'s in her late 30s and wants Allen to be the father of her child. But he\'s tied up in knots—literally.  Does he want children, or doesn\'t he? A "cutting" comedy, The Love Knot is a romantic night out for those looking to laugh out loud about the ties that bind, and the vast differences between lovers.

A 21st Century Vision for Sustainable Communities

A regional GreenStep Cities program is being offered in Grand Rapids, MN on July 29th.  "Going green" sounds good but what can cities and counties really do in tight budget times?   A great first step is to send staff, elected officials and interested citizens to one of two GreenStep Cities seminars at the Grand Rapids Area Library (140 NE 2nd St) on Thursday, July 29th.  The two hour seminar will be presented twice—once from 3:00-5:00 and again from 6:00-8:00.    There will be a social hour with food served from 5:00-6:00.  Please RSVP to (218) 326-0252 or pershirl@gmail.com and let us know if you can attend one of the seminars and if you will be staying for the meal.

Minnesota local governments are facing serious economic challenges because of increased costs as well as decreased revenue.  The GreenStep Cities program is a volunteer municipal sustainability program that was launched at the June meeting of the League of Minnesota Cities.  It is a vision leading our communities into the 21st century and includes actions that could be taken by citizens, citizen groups, business groups, churches, schools and others interested in working towards civic improvement.  The program encourages implementation of best management practices in five areas:  1) improved energy efficiency in buildings and facilities, 2) transportation and street improvements, 3) land use planning, 4) environmental management, and 5) economic and community development.

MN GreenStep Cities has the support of the MN Pollution Control Agency, MN Office of Energy Security, Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTS), and League of MN Cities.  This seminar is hosted by the Grand Rapids Wes Libbey Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and has funding assistance from the Blandin Foundation, Grand Rapids Public Utilities Commission, and Minnesota Power—an Allete Company.

Northern Lights Community School presents "Murder Plays a Sour Note" Dinner Theater

Northern Lights Community School presents "Murder Plays a Sour Note".
The school's theatre club will be presenting a murder mystery dinner
on February 6th at 6:00 PM at the school in Warba. It\'s New Year\'s
Eve 1955... and everyone wants to know who killed Sammy Finatra, Big
Band heartthrob? Come discover \"whodunit\" during \"Murder Plays A
Sour Note,\" this year\'s presentation of murder mystery dinner
theater at Northern Lights Community School in Warba.

The list of suspects includes band leader Lou Gumbardo (Kyle Kujala)
and club owner Roxy Romano (Mikkayla Colombe). Giovanni Fishi (Alex
Resendez), owner of the dry cleaners, or songstress Mary Rose Looney
(Mary Peterson) might have done it. Or maybe it was drummer Betty
\"Boom Boom\" Baxter (Veronica Lilgreen)... or pianist Tony \"Ivory\"
Ivanski (Lucas Douglas). Or Shirley Fedora (Kate Kujala), the hat
check girl.... or could it have been Mayor Richmond Dalley (Jackson
Bunes)?

Come and be part of the mystery and the fun as the Northern Lights
Community School actors tell Sammy\'s story throughout the dinner
performance. Enjoy a delicious meal of lasagna, salad and dessert as
the audience helps to solve the \"crime.\" Prizes will be awarded to
those who attend "in costume". Prizes will also be given to the table
who solves the crime. Advance tickets are available at the school or
purchase your tickets at the door (Adults - $10.00, under 12 - $7.00).
